To make matters worse, they don't appear to care about such fundamentals as personal hygiene or respect for Sam's privacy. Brian, a frat-boy sleaze and soon-to-be-married yuppie, and Ellen, an artist looking for an escape from her monotonous marriage, each get their own evenings in the apartment. He gets two nights each week while the other tenants get their own nights. Everything is well until Sam and Brian switch nights without notifying Ellen, who then blames the "pleasant" things that happen around the office on the slob Brian while berating the responsible Sam for his hedonistic lifestyle.
