Nick Hart is an artist from the United States who has made the 1920s Paris expatriate community his home while he struggles to make ends meet. The most of his time is spent imbibing at neighborhood cafes, mingling with friends, and nagging gallery owner Libby Valentin into purchasing one of his paintings. Nathalie de Ville, a wealthy art patron, recruits him into a conspiracy to fake three of her paintings. Because of this, Hart has multiple confrontations with Bertram Stone, an American rubber billionaire who is married to Rachel Stone, Hart's ex-wife.
