Leon, a photographer, stays with his fiancée, Maya, a waitress, as he looks for work in the photography industry. When Maya calls their friend Jurgis, he arranges for Leon to meet with the successful owner of an artists gallery, Susan Hoff, who assesses Leon's work and requests that he improve the quality of his photographs. During the night, the agitated Leon decides to wander the streets taking photographs with his camera, and he follows three punks down to the subway station; when the group threatens a young woman, Leon protects her, and the boys flee. Leon realizes the woman is missing the next morning. He goes to the police station, but Detective Lynn Hadley ignores him and discredits his statement. Leon becomes concerned with discovering what happened to the stranger and begins watching the subway station. When Leon meets the elegant butcher Mahogany in the train, he suspects him of murder and pursues him everywhere from the start of his voyage into the darkness.
