Candy, the British general who is in charge of training an English squad in 1943, doesn't have much faith in himself or his troops and is seen as out of touch with what's going on in Europe. However, this wasn't always the case. Three women and a German soldier changed the young officer's life in the Boer War and World War I as we witness him flash back to his early days as a young officer.
