Dr. Eduardo Plarr, a half-English, half-Latino doctor who left his native country in search of a better life, is the focus of the story. A representative in Latin America working to prevent revolution, British Consul Charley Fortnum, is among the characters Harry meets along the trip. And he's an embittered alcoholic. When the doctor first meets Clara, Charley's wife, he instantly falls in love with her, but there's a problem: Clara is married to the doctor.
