A Christ figure and other disciples are led by a Mexican master up a mountain to meet with immortal wise men. The Holy Mountain is a spiritual journey to enlightenment that pits illusion against the truth. It was the film that caused a scandal at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973. Writer and director Alejandro Jodorowsky's flood of sacrilegious imagery and existential symbolism in the film is about a quest for enlightenment. Jodorowsky's character, The Alchemist, recruits individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds to play the roles of the various planets in the solar system. Before going on the journey to Lotus Island, the occult adept plans to subject his recruits through a series of bizarre magical rites in an effort to rid them of the worldly burdens they carry with them. There, they climb the Holy Mountain in an effort to oust the eternal gods that wield covert control over the universe.
