Nick Benko, a shady fight promoter, hires jobless sportswriter Eddie Willis to promote his new boxer, Toro Moreno, an unknown from Argentina. Moreno is a big, strong guy, but he has a weak punch and a weak jaw, which hurts his chances of being successful. Benko takes advantage of Willis's reputation for honesty and standing in the boxing world to set up a series of fixed fights that make the unexperienced Moreno the number one contender for the title. Buddy Brannen, the current champion, is angry that Toro has been getting so much attention and promises to beat him badly in the ring. Eddie has to decide now if he should tell the innocent Toro the truth or not.
