Betty Lou works in a small town as a librarian. Her husband is a cop who treats her like a second-class citizen. Betty Lou is the quintessential mouse. Betty Lou discovers the murder weapon when a gangland figure is inexplicably murdered in town, but she can't catch anyone's attention to notify them (this is a mousey situation). Finally, she shoots the pistol in a bathroom in a fit of rage, insisting she is the murderer when escorted to the police station. People pay attention to her as a result of it. She's on her way, aided by the hookers in her cell block who have given her tips about social graces.
