When Phuong Ly, a lovely and poor Vietnamese woman, meets a wealthy and handsome suitor who wishes to marry her, she is instantly smitten. When her boyfriend's mother deliberately sabotages their relationship, her life appears to be in perfect balance. Phuong Ly, a shattered man, moves to Ho Chi Minh City to work as a cleaner at a marriage agency. There, she meets Mitch, one of the men looking for an arranged marriage. To ensure that her family may continue to live in Vietnam and that she has a better life in the United States, he coerces her into marriage. On her arrival in the United States, she learns she has been transported as a slave, although she refuses to believe it at first. She is raped and abused with no way out. It is only via her friendship with the American's autistic niece that she is able to see a way out; both of them are imprisoned and desperate to get out.
