At the beginning of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is tasked with escorting the HMS Compass Rose convoy with inexperienced officers and newly trained sailors. The harsh winter seas make life terrible enough, but the soldiers must also become accustomed to rescuing survivors of U-boat attacks while rarely retaliating. The skipper and his first officer form a close friendship due to traumatic occurrences at sea and on land.
