Set in a little secluded community in 14th century Wales, Alice is a sixteen-year-old girl accused of being a witch and creating the plague that has decimated the village, killing many people, including Alice's own father. When it is revealed that Alice has been concealing her mother's infection, she is forced to witness The Cleanser, a frightening masked figure, mercilessly dispatch her mother. Tom, the village preacher and de-facto leader, has feelings for Alice and exposes her to five excruciating trials when she rejects his advances. With the help of her mother's friend Mary, she flees into the forest and discovers the hidden hut of a mystery healer, who has his own dark past and demons to face. He brings her back to health and teaches her how to inflict vengeance on those who have wronged her.
