Most people in the town think that Sheriff Calder is just Val Rogers' puppet. When Rogers' son finds out that the local bad guy Bubber Reeves has gotten out of jail, he is worried because he is having an affair with Reeves' wife. It looks like a lot of people in town think Reeves might be dangerous. Calder wants to bring Reeves back to safety without hurting him. In his search for justice, Calder will have to fight both the powerful Rogers and the violence of the crowd.
