Following her husband's death, Julie, Jack, Sue, and Tom's mother begins to suffer from an unknown illness. Knowing she'll have to go to the hospital, she opens a bank account for the kids so they can be financially self-sufficient and avoid being taken into care by the authorities. Unfortunately, she also dies, and Julie and Jack (the older, adolescent children) decide to hide her body in the basement so they can have complete control of their household. Soon after, Tom began dressing as a girl, while Sue became increasingly reticent, confiding only in her diary; meanwhile, Jack and Julie sense a developing attraction for each other. However, Julie's new boyfriend, Derek, threatens to expose the family's many dark secrets as he grows suspicious of Jack.
