CinemaScope was based on Frank O'Rourke's novel of the same name. Jim Douglas (Gregory Peck) is a rancher who has been looking for the four outlaws who killed his wife for six months. He rides into the town of Rio Arriba, where four men who fit the description, Alfonso Parral (Lee Van Cleef), Bill Zachary (Stephen Boyd), Ed Taylor (Albert Salmi), and Lujan (Henry Silva), are in jail waiting to be hanged. He does this so that he can see the hanging. The town has told only the hangman (Joe DeRita) to come in, so Jim is taken to Sheriff Eloy Sanchez's (Herbert Rudley) office to explain what's going on. The town has never had an execution before, so they brought in a man from outside the town to do the job. The sheriff lets Jim into the jail to see the men. Though he claims he's never been seen before, his features like those of a hunter.
