When Bruno's family moves from their home in Berlin to a strange new house in Poland, he makes friends with Shmuel, a boy who lives on the other side of the fence where everyone seems to wear striped pajamas. Bruno goes on a dangerous journey inside the camp, not knowing what will happen to Shmuel as a Jewish prisoner or what role his own Nazi father will play in keeping him there.
