The Battle of the River Plate
During the early years of World War II, the Royal Navy fought a desperate effort to keep Atlantic convoy routes open and the British Isles supplied. The numerous surface and commerce raiders that had snuck out of German waters just before war was declared posed a serious threat. Cargo ships or tankers supplied by the Axis supplied them, which meant they could attack and sink merchant ships from any location. "Admiral Graf Spee" was one of these "pocket battleships," armed with 11-inch guns and capable of defeating three British cruisers armed with 6 and 8-inch guns.
