The Star of Rhodesia, a massive diamond owned by Roland Carstairs' mother, Lady Margaret, is in the hands of a thief, and Holmes is recruited to save it. Holmes cleverly swaps gems with Lady Margaret on a train ride from London to Edinburgh because he fears the diamond will be stolen. Roland is assassinated shortly thereafter, and the phony diamond is taken.
