Remember the Sultana

Over 2000 Union soldiers, passengers and staff were stuffed aboard the boat Sultana, certified to bring 376. Graft, greed, overcrowding, a poorly kept boat, and the Mississippi River was swollen with spring snowmelt conspired together to develop a calamity. On April 27, 1865, the boat's central heating boilers took off, causing the worst maritime catastrophe in US background.
