Taking place in 1952 Grey Rocks, a centuries-old village that was formerly famed 250 years ago as a pirate haven, Pirate's Passage tells the narrative of Jim, who is 12 years old at the time of the novel's publication. Jim manages to carry on, buoyed by his hopeful imagination and spurred by his sense of adventure, despite the fact that his father has died and that he is subjected to schoolyard bullying every day. After being pushed off course by a storm, Captain Johnson's small sailboat arrives at Jim's doorstep and completely changes his world. After only a few meetings with him, the Captain rapidly becomes a mentor and friend, teaching Jim invaluable lessons about self-reliance and tenacity. A liberating sense of self-assurance grows in Jim, and the Captain is greatly moved by it, and leads Jim to recognize signs that the Captain may be more than he appears.
