Mr. Meacham, an ancient wood carver, has entertained children in the Pacific Northwest for decades with tales of a fearsome dragon that lives deep in the woods. Grace, the daughter of a forest warden, dismisses her father's stories as nothing more than fantasy until she meets Pete, a 10-year-old who claims to live in the woods with a dragon named Elliott. Pete's descriptions of Elliott, based on Mr. Meacham's stories, make him look a lot like the dragon. With the help of Natalie, an 11-year-old girl whose father, Jack, owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to find out where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.
