The nineteenth century is coming to a close. A boat carrying Swedish emigrants arrives on Bornholm, a Danish island. Lasse and his son Pelle are among those who have relocated to Denmark in search of employment. They find work on a large farm, but are treated as the most deplorable form of life. Pelle begins to speak Danish, but as a foreigner, she is harassed. But none of them wants to abandon their hope of finding a better life than the one they left behind in Sweden.
