Giovanni's current existence consists almost entirely of labor. At school, his classmates mock him incessantly, and at work, his boss is cold and aloof. As his seclusion from society grows intolerable, he finds himself abruptly on a train leaving his dreary house for a distant location. Giovanni starts on a voyage that would define the remainder of his life accompanied by Campanella, a school acquaintance.
