Bill Lee and his dead-eyed wife Joan enjoy getting high on Bill's insecticides while reclining with their Beat poet friends. Bill receives a medicine produced from a centipede after meeting the diabolical Dr. Benway. Upon indulging, he inadvertently kills Joan, gets instructions from his typewriter-turned-cockroach, ends up in a continually shifting Mediterranean city, and discovers that his cool friends have published his work, which he cannot recall authoring.
