During World War II, a British soldier named Jack Celliers is taken prisoner by the Japanese. Yonoi, the camp's director, is a fervent believer in discipline, honor, and glory and runs the program. Allied prisoners who surrender instead than taking their own lives are cowards in his eyes. It is not uncommon for inmates to accuse interpreter John Lawrence of being a traitor for his attempts to shed light on Japanese culture.
