Man of La Mancha
Miguel de Cervantes, poet, writer, and part-time actor, was jailed by the Spanish Inquisition in the sixteenth century, along with his manservant. They are accused of providing entertainment that the Inquisition finds insulting. Within the vast dungeon into which they have been cast, the other prisoners launch a mock trial against Cervantes and his manservant with the purpose of stealing or destroying his valuables. Cervantes desperately wants to save a manuscript he takes with him, so he stages, with costumes, make-up, and the cooperation of the other prisoners, an unconventional defense: the Don Quixote story.
