There's hardly much to do in Sunray, a little town on Australia's Murray River, except fish and listen to the local radio station. D.J. Ken Sherry, who is in his mid-40s, disconnected, thrice divorced, and hatchet-faced, arrives from Brisbane to operate the station. But he appeals to both sisters next door: uncomfortable Dimity,20, who works in a small Chinese restaurant, and cheery Vicki-Ann, a hairdresser with a hope chest who imagines a wonderful future with Sherry based on nothing more than his appearance. Dimity and Vicki-Ann spend the night with Ken, with one thinking he's her male friend and the other thinking he's her fiance. Dimity then detects an unpleasant odor.
