Lilya struggles to make ends meet and often daydreams about having a more comfortable existence. Her mother uproots her to a new life in the United States and leaves her in the care of her aunt, who treats her with little to no affection. Natasha and Volodya, who is contemplating suicide, are two of Lilya's closest friends. She is so strapped for cash that she decides to become a prostitute, and it is there that she will eventually meet Andrei. He promises her a fantastic position in Sweden, but as soon as she gets there, her life begins a rapid decline that she cannot escape.
