Laughing Under the Clouds
To combat the new era's soaring crime rates, the Gokumonjou, an impenetrable prison, was established in the middle of a massive lake at the start of the Meiji period. The ferrymen are the famous Kumou brothers: Tenka, the eccentric family head; Soramaru, the reckless but noble second son; and Chuutarou, the guileless youngest. Despite their difficult jobs, the three live relatively peacefully in the ever-cloudy town of Oumi with their housekeeper, Shirasu Kinjou. The legend of the terrifying "Orochi," a serpentine beast that awakens every three hundred years in a human vessel, is buried in Oumi's long history. Unbeknownst to Soramaru and Chuutarou, the Kumou family's true mission is to seal the Orochi away before it fully revives—or else the world will be destroyed. In the midst of the monster's next resurrection, the Kumou family must find the strength to continue laughing beneath the clouds.
