In the carefree days before World War I, the reserved Austrian novelist Jules befriends the outgoing Frenchman Jim. During this time, Jules is working on a novel. Catherine attracts the attention of two suitors, but in the end, it is Jules who is successful in securing her hand in marriage. Immediately following the conclusion of the war, Jim pays a visit to Jules, Catherine, and their daughter in their residence in Austria. During this trip, Jim realizes that not only have his feelings for Catherine not changed, but that they are also shared by Jules and Catherine.
