Hideo Suzuki, a 35-year-old manga assistant, seems to be locked in a cycle of laborious, low-paying work, unrealized goals, bizarre hallucinations, and unhappy relationships. As a result of his poor self-esteem, he is frustrated by the fact that he views himself as a secondary figure in his own life. One day, an illness that transforms individuals into murderous maniacs whose first inclination is to assault and consume the nearest human destroys the world as Hideo knows it.
