In the weeks leading up to her 15th birthday, Jesse has expressed interest in receiving a horse. Without Jesse's knowledge, her mother Brandy is undergoing treatment for cancer, which forces Jesse's father to jump through hoops that he never imagined he would have to face. He enrolls Jesse in summer camp, but when summer camp is canceled, he chooses to have her stay with her estranged grandfather, an old gruff horse trainer named Gauff, who is a bit of a character in his own right. Gauff, who is still reeling from the death of a beloved horse named Grace, must now contend with the difficulties of teen bargaining.
