When Leon Alastray is offered asylum by Father John, he takes him to the settlement of San Sebastian, where he is greeted by Father John's family. To protect themselves from Indians who frequently attack and steal their supplies, village people retreated to the hills and left their homes abandoned. When Father John is killed, the locals wrongly believe the criminal to be the priest. They don't believe Alastray when he first tells them he's not a priest, but an apparent miracle seems to confirm they're right. His assistance eventually allows them to take control of the situation and stand up for their own interests again.
