When 4-year-old Amanda McCready goes missing from her home and the police can't figure out what happened, the girl's aunt, Beatrice McCready, hires Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro, two private detectives. The detectives freely admit that they don't have much experience with this kind of case, but the family wants them because they aren't police officers and they know the rough area where they all live. Kenzie and Gennaro have to deal with drug dealers, gangs, and pedophiles as the case goes on. Just as they are about to figure out what happened, they are faced with a moral problem that makes them split up.
