Budapest during the 1930s. Laszlo, the restaurant owner, hires pianist András to perform in his establishment. Both guys fall in love with Ilona, a gorgeous waitress who inspires András to compose his one and only song. His song Gloomy Sunday is admired at first, then dreaded, because its melancholy melody causes a cycle of suicides. When the German Hans falls in love with Ilona as well, the delicate balance of the sensual ménage à trois is thrown off.
