FAREWELL is a complicated and extremely brilliant thriller plucked from the pages of history—about an ordinary man catapulted into the Cold War's largest heist of Soviet material. Ronald Reagan dubbed this mostly overlooked chapter of history "one of the most significant espionage instances of the twentieth century." FAREWELL is set in 1981, immediately following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Pierre Froment (Guillaume Canet), a French businessman based in Moscow, strikes an unlikely friendship with Grigoriev (Emir Kusturica), a senior KGB officer disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins transmitting highly classified material to Froment on the Soviet spy network operating in the United States.
