Mona Dearly (Bette Midler), who died recently, was a variety of things: an abusive wife, a controlling mother, a loud-mouthed neighbor, and a violent malcontent. Because of this, when her car and body are recovered in the Hudson River, police Chief Wyatt Rash (Danny DeVito) believes it was a homicide rather than a drowning accident. The problem is that the entire town of Verplanck, New York, harbors a profound aversion to this unrelentingly bitter woman, and Rash finds himself swamped with prospective suspects during his inquiry.
