To make this story come to life, this drama is based on a true story. It takes place in 1965, not long after the Civil Rights Act was passed. In Bogalusa, Louisiana, African-Americans still don't get the same rights as white people. The white power structure in general and the local branch of the KKK keep ignoring their basic human rights. "Deacons for defense" is the name of a group of local black men, many of them former soldiers, who form the group after the fights become too much. The group is made up of all black people who protect the town's black neighborhoods from "white backlash."
