Danton
A tight friendship between Danton and Robespierre led to Robespierre becoming France's dictator in1793, and he vowed to rid the country of dissent by carrying out a series of mass murders that became known as the Reign of Terror. When Robespierre's brutal tyranny was brought to an end, Danton, a well-known representative of the French people, returned to the city to urge the people to demand their rights. To his dismay, even from a friend and colleague, Robespierre refused to consider such an offer, blocking any attempt to apprehend Danton and his allies and have them beheaded.
