In 1871, professional gambler John Devlin marries Sandra "Sandy" Poli, the daughter of Marko Poli, an immigrant who has risen to prominence as a railroad magnate. Sandy intends to utilize their $20,000 nest egg to purchase land options to resell to the railroad at a profit. They are joined on the stage ride to Ft. Abercrombie by Jim Bender and Bigtree Collins, who practically own the town of Fargo, and Devlin is aware that they are willing to defend the small empire by burning their property, damaging their wheat, and blaming the destruction on the Indians. Sandy and John meet Captain Bounce, an irascible old seafarer, as they continue north on the river aboard the "River Bird." Slagin and Carp, two of Bendender's thugs, board the boat and take John's $20,000 at gunpoint. Captain Bounce, on the prowl for the robber's dinghy.
