In1976, Karen and Barry Mason were struggling to maintain their young family and responded to an advertisement in the Los Angeles Times. Hustler Magazine was seeking distributors, as per Larry Flynt. As a result of taking over a local bookstore, Circus of Books, they became fully entrenched in the LGBT community, contrary to their initial intentions. After a decade, they had become the largest distributors of gay pornography in the United States. The film focuses on the double life they lead, attempting to maintain a balance between being parents and members of the LGBT community at a period when it was not yet acknowledged. In addition to risking jail time for a federal obscenity charge, they had to make their store a haven during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Circus of Books provides a rare insight into an untold part of LGBT history via the eyes of the proprietors' daughter, the artist, filmmaker, and singer Rachel Mason.
