In the mid-1970s in France, Vanessa, a former dancer, and Roland, an American writer, traverse the country together. They appear to be drifting apart, but as they remain in a small coastal town, they develop relationships with some of its more vibrant residents, such as a bar/café owner and a hotel proprietor.
