Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai are dispatched to investigate after Ichigo Kurosaki's school was assaulted by unknown spirits known as Unforgiven (Togabito), which were later found to have escaped from Hell. Yuzu Kurosaki, Ichigo's younger sister, is taken hostage by the Unforgiven, who are led by Shuren. The Unforgiven are after Ichigo's family because of Ichigo's connection to the Soul Society. Karin Kurosaki, who was also in danger of being kidnapped, is rescued by an Unforgiven named Kokut, who then persuades Ichigo to travel with him and the Soul Reapers to Hell in order to save Karin. During the course of their journey, Ichigo's Hollow mask begins to spontaneously materialize after they are assaulted by monsters known as Kushanda, which are the guardians of Hell. Kokut advises him to avoid using his mask lest he lose control and hollowfy totally. He also tells him that the Kushanda torment Unforgiven for their misdeeds by killing them, as Unforgiven perpetually resurrect, and that spirits slaughtered in Hell become Unforgiven themselves.
