Beyond the Call

Russell Gates (David Strahairn) is a Vietnam veteran who is serving a life sentence for the murder of a police officer. Pam O'Brien (Sissy Spacek), his childhood girlfriend, is shocked to learn of this and does not believe he could commit such a crime. She writes to him, to to her husband Keith's chagrin, and gets consumed with the matter, pursuing every possible route for the doomed guy. Her marriage and family suffer as a result of her visits to prison.
