The Egyptian Queen Cleopatra bets against the Roman Emperor, Julius Caesar, that her people are still great, even though the time of the Pharaohs is long gone. She promises (against all logic) to build a new palace for Caesar in three months. Since all of her architects are either too busy or too traditional in style, this mixed honor goes to Edifis. He has to build the palace and be covered in gold, or he will be eaten by crocodiles. Edifis calls on an old friend to help him: the great Druid Getafix from Gaul, who makes a great potion that gives superhuman strength. Asterix and Obelix go with the old Druid to Egypt so they can help him and keep him safe. When Julius Caesar hears that the project is working, he sends his troops to attack the building site in order to win the bet and not lose face. But, like the local pirates, he hasn't reckoned on Asterix and Obelix.
