Tess, a new girl in a tranquil community, strives to balance her insanity with her new life with her mother. Tess is overcome by hallucinations of the deceased girl after stumbling onto the shrine of Lucy, a hit-and-run victim, and begins to doubt her sanity once more. When Tess's mind and soul are taken over by a spirit, her mother and daughter are unsure where to turn for help: religion or medicine. Both institutions have failed them thus far, but faith takes them to Sarah's house, where Lucy's mother has been depressed since the accident. Sarah is desperate to think that Lucy is still alive in Tess, despite the fact that time is against them. Neither parent wants to give up on their daughter. Tess must ultimately decide whether she wants to continue battling or succumb to her illness now that she understands what is happening to her.
