While purchasing a vacation property on a resort in New England, Andrew Sterling (Samuel L. Jackson) is mistaken by the authorities for a thief because of his successful black urbanite writing career. After surrounding his residence with armed guards, Chief Tolliver (Dabney Coleman) recognizes his error and, in order to avoid negative publicity, offers a thief in his cell, Amos Odell (Nicolas Cage), a bargain in exchange for his cooperation.
