Francis Ashby, a senior Oxford don on vacation alone in the Alps, encounters American Caroline and her companion Elinor, the blooming Irish-American girl she adopted years earlier. Ashby finds that he enjoys their company, especially Elinor's, and both ladies are attracted to him. Back at Oxford, he is nonetheless surprised by their unannounced arrival.
