Akeelah Anderson's life is not easy: her father is deceased, her mother ignores her, and her brother is involved with the local gangbangers. She is eleven years old. Even if she's bright, her surroundings are conspiring to suffocate her aspirations. Akeelah enters a spelling bee in response to a threat from her school's principal, hoping to avoid detention as a result of her frequent absences from school. She is victorious, much to her surprise and chagrin. After consulting with her principal, she decides to seek assistance from an English professor named Dr. Larabee to prepare for the more renowned regional bee competition. Because of the chance of making it all the way to the National Spelling Bee, Akeelah may give her town someone to unite around and be proud of — but only if she can overcome her fears and her distracted home life. She must also overcome Dr. Larabee's demons, as well as a field of more experienced and privileged fellow spellers, in order to succeed.
