Machisu is a self-taught artist who paints. In reality, he has never achieved the level of success that he believes he should have achieved. Even in the face of this, he never stops working towards his goal of becoming successful. Despite all of his difficulties, his wife Sachiko continues to be his biggest support. Art has always been a passion for Machisu, the only son of a wealthy collector. The little youngster is inspired to become a painter after receiving praise from a famous artist friend of his father's. Machisu is an impoverished loner who manages to pay his way through art school with the money he earns from his job as a young adult. The dealer introduces him to a world of unconventionality and boldness, but he also gets his first stinging taste of scathing criticism from an outside source. Encouragement comes in the form of the lovely clerk Sachiko, who is persuaded that she is the only one who understands him and his situation.
