Han van Meegeren, a young and accomplished artist in Amsterdam's early 1920s art scene, is a renegade. Because he paints in the manner of his idols Rembrandt and Vermeer, critics regard his work as antiquated and label him a copycat. To make a point, he fabricates a Vermeer and attempts to pass it off as the genuine one. :) Rather than divulge the truth and shame the art community, he continues to profit from his numerous forgeries. Soon after, he becomes entangled in a web of deception and falsehoods, and his life spirals out of control. Then high-ranking Nazi Hermann Göring arrives on his home, seeking a Vermeer for his private collection...
